About Viewing the Artwork

art sandwich

This diagram shows sunlight entering from behind while the artwork is sandwiched between two polarizing filters. The front filter is slowly rotated.

The cover filter fits snugly onto the art frame. The artwork changes color by manually rotating the cover filter ninety degrees.

Magazine Articles About Polarizing Filter Art

These old articles describe the origin of polarizing filter art first appearing with filter innovations by Polaroid. I find the earlier articles most entertaining with their accounts of the Kinetichrome and, of course, the Abstractoscope.

1968 Friscia - Kinetichrome and Polarized Light

1968 Martinoya - Chromatic Abstractoscope

1977 Brown - Figurative Polarized Paintings Static and Kinetic

1977 Brown Polarized Light Paintings

1979 Edwards - Colours in Cellophane

1981 Edwards - On Producing Colors

1984 Semenoff - Photographic Images and Optical Birefringent Material
